Comparing Goodfood with other meal kit services.

Goodfood (formerly known as Culiniste) was launched in January 2015 in Montreal. The founders, Jonathan Ferrari and Neil Cuggy, were inspired by the many companies in the United States whom offer meal kit delivery service. As with many of these services, Goodfood delivers the exact quantity of ingredients needed in a refrigerated box along with all the necessary instructions. Once the customer has his box in hand, all that is left to do is cook. The box is delivered even if you are not at home, and it is refrigerated to keep your ingredients fresh. Once the meal kit is delivered, all you must do is put your ingredients in the fridge.

Goodfood currently delivers across Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes (New-Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island). Goodfood is planning on to expand its territory in the upcoming months and start delivering to Western Canada.

How Goodfood works

To benefit from Goodfood services, you must subscribe to them. Then, each week you can select 2 to 4 recipes out of the 7 offered by Goodfood. You will then receive a box with all the necessary ingredients as well as detailed recipe cards. Your ingredients are delivered in a box with thermal protection and icepacks which keeps the meals fresh during transportation. The delivery man has instructions to leave to box at your doorstep if nobody is home. Most of the ingredients keep for a week after the box is delivered.

A bit of history of Goodfood

Goodfood was founded in January 2015 under the name Culiniste by Jonathan Ferrari and Neil Cuggy. During the winter of 2015-2016, Culiniste changes its name to Marché Goodfood. This choice was made to better penetrate the Ontario market. In early 2016, the company announces that it has closed over $1 million in a financing round led by edō Capital. In June 2017, Goodfood goes public (TSE: FOOD), raising over $20 million in financing and being valued at over $100 million. Goodfood was therefore the first ready-to-cook company to be listed on the stock exchange. Blue Apron, a company operating in the United States, went public a few weeks later on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: APRN). Currently Marché Goodfood has approximately 30,000 subscribers and reports monthly revenues of $2 million.

Comparing Goodfood

Across Canada, there are many companies that offer similar services as Goodfood does. The basis stays the same, having a box delivered to your doorstep, with fresh ingredients and recipe cards to go with them. Some stand out with a few more options when selecting your weekly menu. Take Cook it for example, they offer ready-to-eat meals in your weekly order (to be heated) while MissFresh offers a selection of tea or coffee. Goodfood offers meals for 2 or 4 people, MissFresh (2,4 or 6 portions) and Cook it (2,3,4, or 6 portions) offer even more flexibility.
